Everything is More Magical on Broadway

One of the big splurges Jack and I made during our visit was tickets to see two different Broadway shows. I’ve been a huge musical theater fan since I was a wee little thing, but Jack is more of a recent convert. I took him to see his first Broadway show (Phantom of the Opera) a couple of years ago and so it didn’t take too much convincing this time around.

As a birthday present, we took my grandmother out for an early dinner and then to see Anything Goes with Sutton Foster.

UH-mazing! Such a fun, vibrant show! The three of us were chuckling away and it gave me so much pleasure to see my grandmother’s face lit up like that.

What made this even more awesome is that while reading over the program, I found out that Sutton Foster had a cameo in one of my favorite series, Flight of the Conchords! For those of you familiar with the show, she played Coco. I was totally thrown off by her platinum blonde hair in Anything Goes, especially since she’s a slightly frumpy dark brunette as Coco. Knowing this makes me love her even more though!

Next, Jack and I saw Memphis, which won the most awards during the 2009-2010 season. It’s not hard to see why! The plot surrounds a white radio DJ and a black singer during the 1950s.

The dancing matched the singing in its impressive quality. Also, I immediately recognized the male lead’s voice because he played Roger in Rent! Turns out Adam Pascal took over the role literally ONE DAY earlier. He really rocked it, and I’m glad I got to see him in that role after loving him in Rent for so long!

The most magical part of seeing a show on Broadway is having the total and complete escape from the real world for a few hours. You literally walk out feeling emotionally refreshed, if that makes sense. The laughter (and some tears as I watched Memphis) is cleansing and the world just seems like a better place after musical theater. (Yes, I realize that sounds dorky as hell, but I can’t help it! I just freakin’ love it!).
